Review: RecPak Ultralight Meal Replacement
RecPak is a high-calorie meal replacement powder. Just add water, shake, and drink — an easy, portable, no-cook solution for fueling long days outdoors.

Each RecPak pouch is calorie-dense and designed to replace a full meal, providing 700 calories and 42 grams of protein. It delivers balanced macronutrients (50% carbs, 25% protein, 25% fat) along with a broad mix of electrolytes and essential vitamins and minerals—including vitamins C, E, B-complex, A, K, and D, plus sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and more.
This combination supports both cognitive and physical performance during long, high-effort days outdoors and is especially useful when you’re sweating, climbing, or covering big miles and need more than just carbs to keep going.
The formula is easy on the stomach and absorbs quickly, making it gentler than many dense trail bars or shakes. The flat, lightweight pouch is resealable and packable, allowing you to sip your meal on the move or save some for later breaks.

Who This Is For
RecPak works best for people who stay on the move — hikers, backpackers, trail runners, bikepackers, mountaineers, and paddlers — anyone who needs sustained energy without stopping to prepare food. It’s especially useful when:
- You want a complete meal that’s fast and lightweight
- You prefer steady fueling over meal breaks
- Space in your pack matters
- You need an emergency meal that stores well and packs flat
My Experience Using RecPak
I recently tested RecPak on a mid-November day hike in the Cascades. I consumed it instead of snacks or a lunch at the destination, and it was surprisingly satisfying. After mixing and letting it settle briefly, the consistency turned out slightly thick — more like a smoothie than a watery protein drink.
I’m a chai lover, and I really enjoyed the Vanilla Chai flavor. It wasn’t too spicy or overpoweringly chai-flavored, yet it wasn’t plain either — the spices complemented the vanilla nicely. I usually avoid meals with added vitamins and minerals because they can taste artificial, but with this one, I didn’t notice any off flavors like I often do with protein shakes.
At 700 calories, it was very filling, and I appreciated the resealable cap since I could drink it gradually. The flat, flexible pouch packed easily into my daypack. It would also make a convenient emergency meal to stash in a pack, in the car, or at home.

A challenge I often face on backpacking trips is getting enough fuel to keep going. After a strenuous hike, recovery can take a while, and I also struggle with stomach issues during physical exertion. I’ve found RecPak to be a practical solution: I can sip it on the move, keeping the pouch in my pack’s side pocket, without needing to stop as often to refuel – and it’s easy on my stomach. It’s especially well-suited for backpacking, helping me stay energized on long, demanding hikes so I can arrive at camp feeling refreshed instead of wiped out.
Bottom line: RecPak is a practical, high-calorie trail meal that’s easy to pack, quick to prepare, and simple to sip throughout the day – a convenient option that fills the gap between snacks and a full cooked meal.
