Review: Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Insulated Sleeping Pad

With 3.9 inches of loft, an R-value of 4.1, and a 40% smaller packed size than its predecessor, the new Ether Light XR hits that sweet spot between performance specs and trail comfort.

As someone with several years of backpacking experience using the women’s Ether Light XT, I was eager to try the new XR version — and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a solid upgrade with meaningful improvements.

feeling much more like a mattress than an air pad, the Ether Light XR features 3.9 inches of comfort

The Ether Light XR retains what I’ve always loved about the original: a plush 3.9-inch thickness with mattress-style tufting and raised sides that cradle you and keep you centered. I toss and turn a lot when sleeping, and this design is comfortable no matter which position I sleep in — something I can’t say for most pads with horizontal or vertical baffles.

I also appreciate the slightly wider width of this pad — instead of a standard 20 inches, the width of the regular XR is just under 22 inches. Large, wide, and rectangular versions are also available.

Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Sleeping Pad Review

a convenient valve system provides reliable inflation and deflation

With a new R-value of 4.1, it’s warmer than the previous XT version, making it better suited for shoulder seasons or cooler mountain nights. I noticed this difference on a recent backpacking trip when the overnight temp dipped down to 37 degrees. It also packs down 40% smaller, which makes a big difference when every inch of pack space counts.

The fabric remains durable with a 30D nylon top and 40D bottom, but it’s noticeably quieter — no more waking up every time you shift positions. The valve system is also the same, making it easy to inflate, adjust, and deflate the pad with easy to open (but secure when closed) two-way valves. The pump sack is integrated into the stuff sack and makes inflation quick ; it usually takes me just five compressions to inflate the pad fully.

While the Pillow Lock system is handy for keeping Sea to Summit pillows in place, the patches can snag fabric when the pillow isn’t attached. On one trip, they caught the back of my sleeping bag hood and caused minor damage, so I removed them.

Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Sleeping Pad Review

Overall, the Ether Light XR is a thoughtfully upgraded version of an already excellent pad — ideal for backpackers who prioritize comfort, warmth, and packability.
