Review: Zenbivy Pack Liner
Shaving weight usually means sacrificing comfort, but smart packing systems can help. I tested the Zenbivy Pack Liner to find out if it would allow me to carry a smaller, lighter pack.
I usually skip a pack liner unless rain is in the forecast, and when I have used one, it’s been the type that fills the whole backpack. Those have always been frustrating — bulky, awkward to pack around, and they never contour to my backpack, leaving wasted space I can’t fill with other gear.
Testing the Zenbivy Pack Liner has been a totally different experience. I was surprised at how much space it freed up — enough that I downsized from my Osprey Aura LT 65 to an Osprey Aura 50 for a three-day fall backpacking trip. That not only saved space but also shaved weight off my load due to the difference between the packs.

How it works: a one-way valve on the side of the liner lets air escape as you pack it, but doesn’t let any back in. Once loaded, I pressed out the air, folded down the roll top three times to keep water out, and dropped it into my pack. After it’s inside, I pressed down again and it molded into the contours of my backpack, compressing even further.

For my test load, I used the large size liner and packed in my quilt (Zenbivy Light Bed 25-degree), pillow (Zenbivy SoftTop), down jacket (REI Magma), down pants (Montbell Superior), two pairs of socks, underwear, and base layers for sleeping. It compressed my gear more than I’ve ever managed before — even compared to a dedicated quilt compression sack.
With this setup, my full three-day kit easily fit into the Osprey Aura 50, with room to spare. The difference came entirely from being able to fully compress bulky items inside the liner.

The Zenbivy Pack Liner is waterproof, built from tough 30-denier fabric with a reinforced 75-denier bottom. Unlike traditional liners, it’s shaped like a backpack, so it slides in more easily and fills the pack’s contours without leaving empty gaps.
For me, this liner is that rare piece of gear that saves weight, adds convenience, and improves comfort all at once. Even without downsizing to a smaller pack, it creates enough space to carry more inside — eliminating the need for a top lid or strapping gear awkwardly to the outside.
