The insulation chambers are woven directly into two layers of fabric, creating space for the down fill without any stitching. Most down jackets rely on sewn-through channels, which create tiny perforations that can let heat escape and allow cold air in. By removing those stitch holes, the jacket maintains better wind resistance and helps protect the insulation from moisture and dirt.

Inside, the jacket is insulated with 900-fill power Muscovy duck down. Fill power measures how much space one ounce of down occupies — the higher the number, the more air it can trap. Muscovy down clusters tend to be denser and structurally stronger than typical duck or goose down. They have a complex network of filaments, including more backward-facing fibers that help the cluster expand and hold its shape. That structure allows the clusters to trap more air while resisting collapse, which contributes to both insulation efficiency and durability over time.

In practical terms, this means the jacket lofts quickly after being unpacked and holds heat without extra fill. Combined with the stitchless design, it balances warmth and weight effectively.

Field Use

I’ve been testing the Zulu over the past month on multiple winter camping trips along the Oregon Coast, on hikes in the Cascades, and during daily dog walks around town, with temperatures ranging from the 20s to the 40s.

I was able to wear it comfortably while hiking on a particularly cold day without overheating. Even when I didn’t need it while moving on hikes, I often pulled it out of my pack for extended breaks. On winter camping trips along the Oregon Coast, it was especially nice to have on for evening walks along the beach as the sun went down. I find that the jacket provides noticeable warmth without feeling bulky, and it layers easily under a shell when needed.

Fit & Design Details

The overall design is streamlined and practical. There are two zippered hand pockets and two internal drop pockets, which are useful for gloves or small essentials. The hood has elastic binding that provides a secure fit without extra adjustments, and a drawcord at the hem helps seal in warmth. The zipper is smooth and easy to operate, even with cold hands.

I’m wearing a women’s size small. At 5’1″ with a short torso, the jacket runs longer on my frame and extends below my hips. It also fits slightly snug through the waist, but the overall cut works well for me. I appreciate the longer sleeve length, which provides good coverage when moving, and it layers easily without feeling restrictive.

For the women’s version, I have the Bluestone color, which is a muted blue that works well both on the trail and around town. It also comes in Thai Curry, a brighter yellow-orange option, and Chimera, a medium gray. A men’s version is available as well.
