Review: REI Norseland Down Parka

The REI Norseland Down Parka is an extremely warm insulated layer for the coldest conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

I love getting outdoors year-round, from coastal hikes in the winter to camping trips in chilly weather. On active hikes, I don’t usually need something as warm as this parka — but when I’m hanging out at camp in the mornings and evenings, having a single insulated layer that keeps me cozy makes a huge difference. Before, I used to pile on multiple layers — sometimes up to four — which ended up feeling bulky and restrictive.

Since switching to this parka, my winter camping experience has changed. I can lounge by the fire, cook breakfast, or simply enjoy the crisp morning air without constantly retreating to my sleeping bag to warm up. It keeps me comfortable and lets me make the most of my time outdoors.

What I like about the Norsewell Down Parka

This is the warmest coat I’ve owned — I know that when I put it on, I’ll stay toasty even in frigid temps. The down insulation traps heat effectively, and the parka’s mid-thigh length adds coverage where it counts, keeping me comfortable while sitting around campfires, cooking meals, or just relaxing at camp. It blocks wind well, and the DWR finish sheds light rain, though it’s not fully waterproof.

The fleece-lined hood fits snugly without slipping, and the front zipper is sturdy yet easy to operate, with a storm flap and snaps to seal out cold air. Even after hours of wearing it, the balance of warmth and breathability keeps me comfortable without overheating, making it easy to enjoy long stretches of outdoor time.

The length of this parka is 36.5 inches and falls just above my knees, with the back slightly longer than the front. Longer coats can sometimes constrict movement, but the Norseland parka has two 6-inch side zippers to make sitting or walking around easier. They also work to vent the lower body when needed.

Additional features include two outer pockets with zippers to keep items like gloves from falling out, a chest pocket on the interior that’s great for carrying my phone, and knit cuffs inside the sleeves to seal out wind and snow.

For anyone who spends time outdoors in cold weather, the Norseland Down Parka delivers reliable warmth without feeling bulky or restrictive.
