With synthetic insulation and a soft, stretchy shell, the Himali Ascent Stretch Hoodie is designed for alpine use, but it’s become one of my most useful layers for all types of cooler weather adventures in the Pacific Northwest. Salewa Pedroc 2 Powertex Shoes
I recently tested the Salewa Pedroc 2 Powertex Shoes to see how they stack up against my trail runners in fit, traction, and overall performance. The first time I wore them on a moderate hike, the extra support was immediately noticeable — I didn’t feel every rock and root underfoot like I usually do with trail runners, and my feet weren’t as tired afterward. Traction was excellent, and I felt more confident descending loose scree than usual. The reinforced heel and toe caps were also appreciated when I bumped into rocks along the trail. Overall, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well these shoes have worked out for me and I think I’ll be turning to them often, especially when I need a more supportive and durable shoe that offers excellent traction and protection on technical trails.

REI XeroCloud 3L Rain Jacket
I’ve been wearing the REI XeroCloud 3L Rain Jacket on rainy walks and hikes all year, and so far it hasn’t wetted out – even in steady rain. The fabric is soft and stretchy, without the slick feel of a typical rain jacket, and it’s comfortable to wear. On me, the fit is relaxed without being baggy, with plenty of room to wear a mid-layer under it without feeling cramped. Extra features include pit zips for ventilation, a chest pocket that’s handy for holding a smartphone, plus two zippered hand pockets and an adjustable hood. When not in use, the jacket stuffs into the left-hand pocket, which makes it easy to stash in my pack.
